I get a lot of older customers who complain that their old washers and dryers and refrigerators lasted 30+years and now have to deal with cheap stuff like now.

I respond to the customer, "This is what you call Progress."

With the exception of dryers I would say they are wrong about the lifespans ,should be half that if talking NEW machines.

I would also be interested in knowing how they collected this information.

Those numbers are correct for a family that takes care of their appliances (performs regular maintenance, does simple repairs on their own, etc). However, people these days/our customers use and abuse their appliances because they have no respect for anything. Reduce those numbers by 50% and that's the true lifespan.

It really depends on the brand. Generally, GE refrigerators and stoves are relatively easy to repair, and their refrigerators use reliable GE compressors. Have seen ony one compressor failure
 at Penn State and their items are 12 years old.
 Have seen a few Embrako compressors fail in GE refrigerators recently, hope this is not a trend for GE.
