frs22zrgw2 Fridgaire Nightmare

[Helpless]

1. Freezer stopped freezing
2. Discovered interior coils were iced over (thawed with hair dryer)
3. Several days later interior coils iced over again  (thawed with hair dryer)
4. Folowed directions found on net to solve problem (fan in lower rear was dead, replaced it)
5. About a week later interior coils iced over again (thawed with hair dryer)
6. Now freezer is just barely cool 24 hours after last thaw.
7. Turned screw on timer until it clicked all fans stopped for about 12 minutes

Any pointers in the right direction to repair this would be highly appreciated ......

OR lightly, evenly, entirely frosted ?

With the refrigerator running and cold, turn the defrost timer slowly until it clicks and everything stops. Take off the cover to the evaporator and in a little bit you should hear and see ice melting. This is a calrod heater so it won.t be red hot. Also look at the defrost thermostat at the top of the coil. Sometimes the top of it pops up, a sure sign of failure.You can check it with an ohm meter while it is cold. It should be closed. Don't let it warm up or it will be open and tell you nothing then.You could also check the continuity of the heater with power disconnected. If the heater and thermostat check out OK that really just leaves the timer.

Bailey, Just removed panel to expose coil in freezer side. Turned screw on timer and almost instantly the ice started melting ! Coil was only frozen where tube reduced to the small diameter. Dont have ohm meter or knowladge to use. Possible to just replace both the timer and thermostat to cure my nightmare?

When you said in the original post that the coils were iced over, how much frost are we talking about? Lightly frosted is good,
looking like someone had packed snow in it, not good.Also the frost pattern should be even over the complete coil, not just part of it.

Looked like packed snow from the the top. Looked like it was working its way down from the top.

If you are sure that the heater came on, then replace the timer.

Low on refrigerant, or partial cap tube blockage. Usually on Frigidaire units, I find they are low.

Some units come from Mexico. My theory is charging the system at high altitude works great in Mexico but not at sea level. They work fine for several years but fade gradually. A small amount of freon brangs em back to life.
