LG Tromm WM2277HW Spins but won't start cycle
« on: February 10, 2013, 10:16:35 AM »
My LG Tromm will spin (when I push start), but won't start the cycle (just keeps spinning)...intermittently. I have to turn off the power switch, turn it back on, reset the wash cycle and try again.  Sometime I have to do this 3 times to get the cycle going.  Sometimes, I have no problems at all and it starts right up into the wash cycle.
I also intermittently get the door code (DE) at start with associated chime.  If I open and close the door, that usually cures that problem.
I don't know if these two issues are related or if I have two separate pending failures.

Any tips would be appreciated...before I start throwing parts at this thing i.e. a door switch...and whatever else I might need.
  Thanks!

You may have a control board issue and is getting worse and worse.  The program is getting corrupted and will probably need to replaced soon.

Hope this helps

I do not believe that either problems plays in to each other, they are separate. If the unit just seems to tumble slowly back and forth, similar to load sensing, without any other errors, I would believe the culprit would be the main pcb. Very hard to definitively diagnose, but the software is located in the MAIN pcb in the FRONT loaders... Wild is the man. :D

<<<My LG Tromm will spin (when I push start), but won't start the cycle (just keeps spinning)...intermittently.>>>

********

Washer *tumbles* (rotates) erratically/intermittently?

********

<<<I also intermittently get the door code (DE) at start with associated chime>>>

<<<I don't know if these two issues are related or if I have two separate pending failures.>>>

*********

All LG WM2277 washers have the older HALL EFFECT SENSOR (6501KW2002A)

The resistor inside the original HALL EFFECT SENSOR (also called Rotor Position Sensor) is sensitive to overuse of detergent (high load during RINSE cycle).

Nearly all detergent manufacturers instruct consumers to use too much HE (High Efficiency/Low Suds) type deteregent.

The ***correct*** amount is as follows:

HE: (2) Tablespoons Per Wash

HE 2X (double concentrated): (1) Tablespoon

HE 3X (triple concentrated): (1) Teaspoon

Failure to use the correct amount in older LG washers---will eventually damage the Hall Effect Sensor.

Beginning in early 2008---newer Hall Effect Sensors replaced the original---having a much more robust *resistor*.

I've *never* had a failure---of the new Sensor.

The Hall Effect Sensor provides data feedback to the Main Board

1) Direction of tub rotation

2) Speed of Motor/Tub

3) Weight of Laundry

4) Electrical Load of Motor (primarily for suds detection during RINSE)

5) Prevents the door from *unlocking* until the tub comes to a complete stop (safety).

Judging by your description (and  my own personal experience)---it would appear that the Hall Effect Sensor has NOT *completely* failed.

Some data feedback is insufficient or missing entirely (from the Hall Effect Sensor-to-the-Main Board)

When a cycle is started---the first action that occurs---is measuring the *dry* weight of the laundry in the tub.

Then a partial fill of water occurs---to get the clothing/fabrics somewhat wet.

Based on these variables (weight feedback from the Sensor) the Main Board will "know" how much water is needed to wash the weight of the laundry in the tub.

If the data feedback is missing or incomplete---the washer will behave differently than it nomally does (waiting/attempting to receive feedback/stalled).

In most cases a failed Hall Effect Sensor will trigger an "LE" error---but not always.

It's also less expensive than a Main Board---replace the Hall Effect Sensor first :)

NOTE:

The part number has NOT been changed---and remains the same (6501KW2002A)

Here's another tip for LG service techs---rookies & veterans...

Customer calls and wants to schedule service for an older LG washer---the owner explains that the washer does not tumble or spin.

Upon arriving---you initiate the TEST MODE---wait until the door locks---and press the START button 3 times for a high speed spin test.

Aside from the Drain Motor running---nothing happens---the tub does not even flinch/move.

At this point your're thinking: "I installed a new HALL EFFECT SENSOR on this washer back in 2009."

"Could the newer/re-designed sensor have failed?"

Check the Display Panel.

If the number "0" is displayed (not an "LE" error)---it's most likely a failed MAIN BOARD.

Inspect the wires at the Hall Effect Sensor---especially at the base of the washer where the wire harness is secured by a wire tie.

Check for a loose/corroded plug at the Hall Effect Sensor and at the Main Board.

If all are good---replace MAIN BOARD (failed Motor Relay on board)

Thanks for the tips!  I think I'll replace the hall Sensor first since it's only $19.00 and easy to do...

The Hall Sensor should arrive today or tomorrow.
Just curious, if this doesn't fix the problem, I'm assuming it's the Mother Board (Main Board).  Where is that located and how do you change it and what's the Part Number?

Thanks again for the help.

Main PCB is in the upper left of the cabinet. Having an updated Hall Effect sensor is great. However, I do believe the main pcb is the cause for your particular issue provided all wiring and connectors are ok.  :D

Could be :)

However the following symptoms are not typical characteristics of a failing MAIN BOARD...

Thank you, domain :)

---> I hope my diagnosis is correct :) <---

Now---if you've been doing *Bosch* (or any other manufacturer that I don't) warranty for ten years---I'd respect your knowledge just the same :)

Have a great weekend

Ok, installed the "Hall Sensor" this afternoon (not to bad).  First load of laundry started and ran normally.  We'll call it good after several loads have been run through...

I congratulate you, APG85 :)

For resisting the *urge* that---anytime a malfunction occurs---"it's just gotta be a main board problem".

90% of troubleshooting/diagnostics---is **listening** to the consumer/asking additional questions. :)

God Bless
