Maytag Bottom Freezer leaking water every couple months
« on: February 10, 2013, 08:09:39 AM »
Model: MBR2256KES3  Serial: KY1835567

Have a customer that has a puddle in the front of the fridge every couple of months then gone and repeat cycle.  The unit is working just fine.  Ice maker no problems (cubes look good no overfill).  Defrost no problems (drain clear and draining into the pan no problem).  Could not find any cracks in drain pan.  It is level.  Condenser coils clean etc.  No external factors that I saw.  Could not find anything wrong with the unit except every couple months they have the puddle then gone.  ???

They do have hard water and are on a RO System but I don't see any problems at the ice maker so am assuming water pressure is adequate.  Any thoughts?  Any one ever seen this?  Am I missing something simple?  Any advice would be appreciated... :thanks:

My first thoughts too, but you would hope the customer would have a clue, lol...

Could the defrost pan be over flowing or have a crack in it?

I know you did not ask for them, but for future references here is the link to the service manual.

I have also attached a copy of the tech sheet for this model.

AJ, I did run some water through the defrost drain and directly into the pan and no leaks so am guessing no cracks in it...

Must be a cracked door gasket. Them ice boxs don't defrost in a set a mount of time. They do it when necessary I imagine. And when they do defrost they stay in defrost a lot longer than a timed defrost. Up to 40 minutes. Plenty time for more than the usual amount water to drain out on the floor.

JW, no sign of excessive frost or ice build up and I would think it would happen every few days if associated with defrost.

Double check the defrost pan especially right hand side near front  of fridge (looking from back ) .I have had the exact same call .Check to see if metal under the pan is discoloured .Changed tons of these pans for crack in area I mentioned .

Awesome!  Thanks RAH!
I read your post about "duck bill" drain before I went thinking I was looking at a defrost drain issue but it's not.  Great info...I will let you know what I find.  Have some parts on order for their microwave so will look when I get back out there.
 :thanks:

I have a similar model, and had a similar problem.   One additional symptom I had when the water was on the floor....there was a thick slab of ice on the bottom of the freezer.   PROBLEM:  there is a rubber funnel called a duckbill drain, on the end of the tube that drains into the pan. ( Access to that piece is through the small grill on the back, NOT through the front.)   This part does not show on parts lists.   Some months ago, AJ posted a whirlpool tech sheet about this item...the rubber would soften from the heat, being near the condensor coil, and clog over, preventing drain.)
If you don't have ice build up on the bottom of the freezer, then this is not your problem.  But I understand it IS a fairly common problem, so I wanted to mention it.

Thanks Jimbo6679, this unit doesn't have that problem but that was one of my first thoughts.  Here is the post in referance...  http://appliancejunk.com/forums/index.php?topic=11336.0

I replaced a drain pan on one of these last summer. Took me a couple of trips to find it because of course everything is dry by the time you show up.
