The dishwasher makes a grinding sound during the wash cycle and doesn't clean well. Drain cycle works okay with normal sound--no grinding.

Looking at the diagram, I think it's probably the sump or impeller but don't know which...

I pulled the food chopper out and it seems that the screen part is not connected to the center axle of the chopper assembly.  It looks suspicious to me. I ordered a new chopper. It is not clear if the screen is supposed to be so loose on the axle even though it looks like the screen does not turn?

was the chopper screen clogged with junk? run without chopper if noisy its bad motor.

Chopper was about 25% clogged.  I have yet to run without chopper but I will try that.

I recently had this problem. First time I cleaned the screen. About a month later it was plugged up again. Turns out the blade was not turning. Upon closer examination, the ears on the wash impeller that engage the ears on the chopper blade had broken off. Had to install a new motor-impeller assembly.

It does not take much to slow this piece of junk down. I tell my customers to never put such things as a jar with a label in dishwasher. It will clog this small screen very quickly. Junk!!
