maytag refrigerator noise

We have a Maytag refrigerator model #MTB1956GEW. Every 8 to 9 hrs. there is a loud knocking, banging or clicking noise that has become louder over the years. It seems to be associated with the defrost cycle. Is there a repair for this?

When in defrost mode there are 3 components at work.
The defrost timer.
Defrost termination thermostat.
Defrost heater.
Your defrost thermostat can make noise.
Not so for the other 2 components.
When you hear the noise again,open the fresh food door and listen closely at the control panel.
If the noise emanates from there,it is the defrost timer making noise.

If it doesn't come from there, open the freezer door and see if the noise is from behind the rear wall. The aluminum freezer coil goes from being very cold to being warm enough to melt the frost off of it. There is going to be some expansion of the metal as it does this.

Thank you it does seem to be coming from the freezer area. Have you heard if anything can be done to eliminate or quieten this noise in anyway?

There are remedies.
First we have to be sure where the noise is coming from and what is causing it.
That is your job.
What is running OR not running when the noise occurs?
How long does the noise last?
Exactly what sounds are made? gurgling,clicking,thumping,knocking,sizzling???

Every 8 to 9 hrs., for approx. 45 to 60 mins. we experience 10 to 15 clicking to knocking noises, some much louder than others. We've noticed that over the years they are getting louder & are quite annoying. It seems to be during the defrost cycle the compressor shuts off & when you open the freezer door to listen where it is coming from you see the glow of the defrost element through the fins of the back wall. It sometimes sounds like 2 or 3 marbles falling down one stair or ice falling.

It could in fact be ice falling.
You may have too much condensation entering the unit causing more frost/ice than normal.
You will have to remove the inside rear panel of the freezer compartment when it is time for another defrost cycle to get your eyes on the frost/ice pattern.
You can also watch the defrost process to see and hear exactly what is going on in the freezer during defrost.
If there is excessive frost/ice the problem may be originating with loose door seals.
