Washer works now and then

Have a friend with a Maytag washer model#LAT5005AAE. He said it just sits and the timer runs but washer doesnt. If he opens the lid the timer stops running. Then now and then if he lets it just sit and run(timer) it will start up and rinse then continue on and spin like it should. Then if you try it again it is the same, fills but wont wash or spin on any cycle. Does this mean the timer is bad?

A washing machine fills with water and then its up to the motor to come on so the machine can agitate, pump out and spin. There is a wiring diagram in the control panel. With that you can see if the motor is getting power. Sorry, I don't have a copy of the digram to tell
you which wires to check but it is a single speed motor so it shouldn't be to hard.

does it always "start up" in the same spot ?

No it doesnt always start back up in the same spot. Sometimes it might be on Perm Press then again next time be on Normal. He turns it around to different spots trying to see if it will go. Since the timer is running he just leaves it and as I said above, it starts up sometimes.

Number 5 Check switch is probably on the way out or going out. Part number 207166. It could be the whole switch assembly mechanically is failing.
