Whirlpool Cabrio Washer bearing noise during spin

Have a relatively newer Cabrio and all of a sudden it is making a very loud sound during spinning.  Repairman says $500 to fix bearings.  I just replaced my dryer two weeks ago and don't want to buy a new washer this month too.  Any suggestions?  I'm fairly handy, so if you know how to repair it, how long will it take?
