Non payment customer from 2 years ago calls me last night.
« on: November 06, 2012, 09:39:38 AM »
So last night I noticed a voice mail on my cell phone. It was from a customer who's dishwasher I repaired about 2 years ago and never got paid for it.

They left a message that their freezer stopped working and would like for me to come look at it.

I'm thinking I bet they would like me to come look at it because it did not cost them anything the last time I looked at something for them.

I can't believe the nerve of some people.

I never returned the call and first thing this morning they tried calling me again, but I just let voice mail get it. I don't have time for them kind of games anymore.

I think they forgot, or was hoping that you forgot,  that you did the work two years ago ..
and they've run down the list of servicemen to call (all never paid)

I think you're missing an opportunity.  Go to the call with the bill from the old call.  Diagnose the freezer, quote double your rate.  Have them pay you in advance for both the old call and the new call in cash.  If they insist on paying with a check, have them make out to you and go cash it before you do any work. Of course, if your day is full and they're 50 miles out it's not worth it.

and the list of serviceman for this area keeps getting shorter.  ;D

I would have answered the phone. Tell them you'll fix the fridge after you get payment for the dishwasher repair. If they do the right thing and pay you, charge double labor on the fridge repair. Give then an estimate up front and accept cash only.

I bet they have stiffed so many they can't remember.   Pickup & ask how their dishwasher is running. Then remind them what they owe plus interest.  Just curious how they would respond.

I had a customer that would not pay the bill.Owned a rest home. Then the other servicers would go out, until there was no one left. They then would pay the "old bill" then request service again. I felt sorry for the people in there without a working oven etc. and would go out but diagnose then say have to order a part( had it on the truck but had to reorder replacement so not really lying) get a LARGE deposit and come back the next day and complete the repair.

I was a debt collector for a large collections agency for a brief period of time.  I learned a little bit about how to get people to pay their bills.  I apply this at $ears.  I don't leave the house until I get paid.  Even if it's the minimum charge.  I make sure they pay.  If they don't, I call a number and make sure we never go out there again. If the computer doesn't see money, I have to answer to three idiots the next day and that just slows me down.

Sweet. I used to go to the customers door with a HAND TRUCk. I would tell them to pay half and I would rip up the bill. Very effective.

I would answer,  and tell them I would be happy to come out and repair the freezer,  BUT I cannot because they never paid the bill for the dishwasher.    If they act like they did,  or say they didn't realize it,  tell them you need the payment for the previous bill,  and UPFRONT payment for the new repair.   Once the diagnosis is made,  you need the money upfront before fixing it.    I would also tell them that if they don't want to pay,  you will be informing the other repair services in the area about them so they don't get stiffed.     Worth a shot,  and you might get your money for the work you did on dishwasher.
