Self clean is ridiculous
« on: November 03, 2012, 09:44:00 PM »

Just installed this craigslist find and ran self clean for $h!ts and giggles. It's been running for a little over an hour... I can't believe people run self clean weekly. This really puts a strain on the internal components. The manufacturers must love it. Keeps people coming back to buy new stuff.

I think self cleaning maybe harder on them now with all the electronics then back when they had mechanical controls/clocks.

Did ovens and ranges even have thermal fuses back in the day's of mechanical controls/clocks?

Nope. You could run them until the motors in the clocks went out.  The old GE P7's had miles of thick gauge wiring, double insulation and even a cooling fan. No thermal fuses. They were built like tanks.

Agreed, Low.   those old Ge ovens are still very prevelant in my area and are durable as hell.   I routinely run across ovens 40 years old and older.   Biggest problem,  themo's, controls and other misc. parts are no longer available.   They even stopped making some of the electronic replacement Clocks for some models.   When I junk one,  I always strip off the usable parts..   I just had an Electrolux Icon built in,  computer went.   Was under 2 years old.    Enough said.

I had a customer with a KA built in oven with no heat trying to get Sears to replace the unit under the lemon policy. I was the fifth or sixth tech to replace the thermo disc. After some talking to her while I pulled the oven to replace the disc she tells me that she uses self clean every time she uses the oven. I told her that she shouldn't use it more than twice a year and any more than that would be considered abuse. A few weeks later I got a call from my boss saying I had a complaint from that customer.... ::)

I would guess he did not. One of the few good thing about the guy I had worked for before going out on my own is he would stand behind me and back me up all the time. Maybe your boss is not a team player.

She's a backstabbing, two-faced moron. She never backs us up. She's right and we're wrong. I do not like her at all. The worst boss I've ever had. I can't wait to be on my own.

Whirlpool now has a new self clean system called aqua lift .The customer starts by pouring a litre of water in the bottom of the oven  I've copied and pasted the rest from W/P sales blurb .         "
Get your oven clean in less than an hour with odor-free, low temperature AquaLift™ Self-clean technology.
It’s been nearly 50 years since self-cleaning ovens were introduced, and it’s time for something new. Maytag brand is revolutionizing how ovens can be cleaned with the introduction of AquaLift™ self-clean technology. Maytag brand’s latest line of freestanding ranges offer consumers an innovation to self-clean the oven interior with an exclusive enamel oven coating, low heat and water to release baked-on spills in less than one hour.
Temperatures stay below 200 degrees as compared to ovens that require heat of up to 800 degrees during the self-cleaning cycle.
The ranges have been engineered with an exclusive enamel oven coating that activates with water and low heat, allowing moisture to release tough baked-on messes. In less than an hour, the oven is ready for a final wipe-down to remove food and debris, with no odor or extreme heat like traditional high-temperature self-clean ovens.  "
I've seen the before and after and it really does an amazing job .
