Frigidaire Dryer Drum-- Bearing surface paint????

I just replaced the felt strip and the drum glide on my old dryer.  The instructions that came with the kit say to make sure the paint inside the drum bearing surface is intact.  It is not-- how could it be, it is constantly rubbing.

I can see how it could be a problem, when I first acquired the dryer, it had sat in a basement unused for quite some time and it developed rust.  I think the rust was abrasive enough to cause the glides to wear out faster.  Now the inside is polished and smooth.

I also see the problem of rust streaks on clothes but this repair should prevent clothes from slipping up in there anyway. 

And I see good reason to make sure the lip inside the felt is painted as clothes will be rubbing against that and paint is worn away there.

So how important is painting the bearing surface?  Suggested paint?

When I see these, the paint almost never there.  The glide does wear down faster without the paint.  If you have the time and ambition, I would repaint it.  A good appliance paint should work.  Otherwise, you can replace the drum. The new drum has a glide ring around the front of the drum and comes with new felt.  If you post your model, I can get you a part number.

I figure the drum is more expensive than the dryer is worth to me.  I found it in a basement a year ago and replaced the heating element.  Now I just replaced the belt, glide drum felt and lower felt.  I had not seen anything about worrying about the paint online until I got the actual part with the instructions in the package.  It is nice and smooth all around inside, so I just put it back together.  It will last as long as it lasts-- then I will find a GE machine somewhere.
