Replacing digital temperature controller. What sensor??

Hi guys. A friend called yesterday saying his bar fridge had blown a fuse and he could smell smoke. He changed the fuse and turned it back on and it ran normal but he said the digital display was not longer working. So I went in there and found that the digital temperature controller was all melted and burnt. and seemed like it was caused by water or a loose wire. Would anything else cause this? It's only a smallish bar fridge so should be reasonably easy to replace to display. I'm just wondering how much effect the existing sensor has on my selection of display? Does the type of thermistor probe effect my selection?

Manufacturer is SFYB and model no SF-101 (dodgy chinese co.)
I've attached a pic of it (a new one) and the wiring diagram so looks straight forward to swap so have ordered one from RS.
I'm a sparky but don't know LOADS about fridges. I gather it's a thermistor, but are there any other factors to consider?
Also could there have been something else cause it to burn out? I'll test the current drawn by the compressor
