Maytag Neptune Front-load Washer Smoking (MAH8700AWW)

Hello,

I have a Maytag Neptune Front-load Washer (MAH8700AWW) I purchased in 2005. Last night I ran a load and when it got to the spin cycle (8 min left) there was a loud rapid banging noise. I stopped it and when I opened the door some smoke came out and it smelt like burnt rubber. I took the top and rear panels off but don't see an obvious issue. I can disassemble it further and provide pictures if that would help diagnose.

Do any of you all know what the issue might be? I'm not finding a lot of info online about this problem.

Can you open the door and spin the basket by hand?
Does the basket turn freely?


Maybe something got caught between the basket and outer tub.

If inner basket has alot of play up & down, bearings & tub support will need replaced.

Yes, I can spin the basket by hand and it turns freely in both directions.  Does that give you any clues?
