Whirlpool WTW6700TW1 tearing clothes

Got a call on this one today, customer showed me towels that had tears or holes in them after washing them. I saw the tub ring plastic was worn in spots and I will be replacing it. But I started thinking about why that ring got damaged, am I missing something regarding this repair?

Usually overloading washer, jeans buckles , zippers & button damage tub top.
