Relay replacement conflict: GE fridge SSH25KFRFWW
« on: September 24, 2012, 02:00:09 PM »
Got a call on this fridge.  It had a burnt relay.  The relay that burnt is this one:

http://www.appliancepartspros.com/Appliance-Parts/whirlpool-compressor-starting-device-item-number-ap4079373.aspx

The existing relay is exact, in all respects of shape, etc.  (there is a small "ge" logo, but you can see one on the picture, too)

The model calls for this relay: http://www.appliancepartspros.com/Appliance-Parts/ge-5sp-overload-ptc-item-number-ap3884299.aspx

Would you guys go with replacing the exact part that came off? or the one that the model number calls for.  The exact one that came off is cheaper & includes the capacitor.  The one the model number calls for does not include the capacitor.  And in that case, would you swap out the capacitor as well?

I guess I'm inclined to get the model part, plus a new capacitor,  thinking that some other tech just replaced the relay with what was on his truck at one time.

What do you think?

Either one would probably be fine, but being the one that was on there already failed I would go with the replacement the model number calls for.

Maybe it's new and improved, lol...
Hope you find our website helpful.

Yeah, I looked for that.  There's no mention of a substitution.  I figure if there is a problem, I can point to the model number for the one I replace, but if I match the old one, I'd have to produce it to prove that I swapped whats there now.

That relay on your first post is a maytag relay and the wrong relay for a G.E refrigerator. The white relay is the right one but you will have to order a capacitor as you only get the relay.

Thanks Dab,

I know its a different relay, but it is what was there.  I identified it by the shape.  I'm assuming it could not have the exact(!) same shape if it was from a different manufacturer.  Also, the capacitor on it (in another photo) has a GE logo.

Anyway, I ordered the one that the model number called for.  I figure this one might have been put there by some other tech who had it on his truck.

Ya your right but if you order new relay it will come without capacitor.

Maybe I should start a new topic.  I hope this gets some attention.

Same Fridge:  GE  SSH25KFRFWW

Need Manual / Tech sheet.

Came on fridge plugged in.  Relay on control board clicking.  Compressor not running, but pretty warm.  Relay (discussed above) had hole burned in bottom.  Replaced relay.

Nothing.  No compressor or fan, relay on board still clicking.  Turned off Cold Control, one of these: AP3796849

Plugged back in.  Relay still clicking, nothing else.

I don't have a wiring diagram, but the leads to the relay are orange and black.  The black lead has wandering voltage, orange is dead.  I'd guess that orange should have something, but w/out diagram...

Control board looks OK visually.  Tested compressor with test cord & it starts right up.

Any ideas (or manual/tech sheet)?

 :thanks:

You could have bad mother board.Replace board and see want you get. Here is a way that may help you to find out if you are getting power to compressor.

Hi Dab,

I didn't check the control board w/o manual/tech sheet, but will go back.  I've very little experience with the boards.  It looks like I have the manual you cut that out of, at least I have the same page in the one I'm using.  With the cold controls I indicated, you can't get into the diagnostics that my manual indicates.

The orange line to the compressor, which I'm guessing comes from J7/9, is completely dead.  The wiring diagram from my manual shows a tab1 black, but the board schematic does not.

If no juice at j7/9 it looks like a dead control board to me, to the extent I can go w/out the exact manual/tech sheet.

You can also go under manuals on appliance junk and download manual 31-9072 that is very good.
