Thong trouble

Helping a friend fix a non-working Whirlpool washer I found that the pump was jammed with two pairs of thongs. Jammed pump= jammed motor = nothing happens after water fill. I freed the pump and watched it go through a cycle without problem. However I think it vibrates too much in spin mode. When checking to see if a spring was missing or something I saw that there are two plastic cups attached to the frame under the tub and in these cups are metal pins which could be pushed up through holes in two metal plates and then these plates would have limited movement. What I would like to know is whether these pins should be in the plastic cups or whether they should be holding the two metal plates together to stop them moving?

They should be in the plastic cups.

Those are shipping pins. They need to be removed. They should have been removed when they were delivered. Simply shove the pin sideways till it pops out.

JW, he said they were in the plastic cups already. The pins get dropped into them cups when the shipping strap is removed from the back of the washer. The reason the pins fall into the cups is just so they don't end up on the floor.

If the pins are in the cups they are fine as that is were they should be.

Well that has cleared that up!  Thank you all for your expert advice.

So far, the only thing that was cleared up is what the pins are for, not why your machine is off-balance. The metal plates are supposed to slide around a bit to maintain balance, however there are 3 friction pads placed on the mating surface of the support plates which retard excessive tub movement.  On older machines, these can wear down, requiring replacement.

Hopefully, you did not lay this machine on its side to do your repairs or you likely over stretched the tub support springs.

Well I was satisfied to learn the function of the pins but you are quite right I was forgetting the problem of the excessive vibration / movement in the spin cycle.

The machine was transported on its side from one house to another but I am hoping that the springs are strong enough to withstand that trip? I think I will replace the friction pads. Thank you for informing me of the existence of these items. If not the pads than the springs is what you are telling me, I think. Thanks for your advice. Your information was all new to me.

Ok, so plan on NEW springs and pads.

The machine should not have been transported:

a) On its side
b) Without the shipping pins installed

beside that when you lay down the washer all the oil runs out the transmission weep hole. Not Good!
