Do Any of you use a direct test starting device to start the compressor with out the over load or relay?

You mean like an all in one like this?

I have one in my junk connected to a lamp cord. if I ain't sure what is going on with a compressor I yank off the relay and connect up this puppy to see if a compressor will kick on.

No i have a Robinair  Direct Compressor tester that will if you disconnect all the wires to compressor that i got from G.E when i work for them 30 years ago that you put one wire on the common compressor terminal the others go on start and run and as a fuse build into it and a plug in line cord and you direct test compressor to see if it starts. i don't think they made them anymore but is a good way test compressor with out relay.  Of coarse you would check for a grounded compressor with ohm meter first. And a amprobe.

I keep a hard start with me. Permanently wired a power cord onto it so all you do is connect your 3 wires to compressor, plug into outlet and viola.
Good work isn't cheap. Cheap work isn't good.

That is a good way to do it.   I keep a ton of relays on my truck,   along with capacitors.

I have something similar to this. (courtesy of Daves Repair

That hard start idea with the cord is good.  I've got one hooked up to a loaner fridge.  I wonder why I never thought of using that?
