Maytag Washer will not spin dry in certain settings

I have a Maytag washer model # MAV5000AWW.  In regular cycle during the final spin it will not spin unless I turn the agitator clockwise about a quarter of a spin till it stops turning and close the lid.  Even then it spins very slowly.  If you change the setting to "dedicates" it will spin dry properly in the proper cycle.

A common problem with this machine is the transmission pulley.In the spin direction it has to release the brake. On the original version of this pulley, there is a flat needle bearing that disintegrates. This changes the spacing that is required and the brake drags. The new pulley is different. The only way to tell is to take the pulley off and see if the bearing is there.

Thank you.  I'll take a look tonight when I get home.  Looking at a diagram online, are you referring to the "Thrust Bearing Kit"?

Yes. Look at the parts breakdown and you will see the pulley and above it the stack of washers. Remember the order in which they come off so you can get it back together if nothing is wrong with it. The second washer from the bottom is actually the bearing. It can actually grind itself to dust and disappear, so if you didn't know it was supposed to be there you would not realize it was missing.

I have a Maytag MAH4000AWW that will not completely spin out the water at certain times.  Sometimes it works and other times the cloths are sopping wet.  Has there been a recall on this?  What might have caused this to happen?

Probably best to start a new topic but since I'm typing anyway. These machines have three switches that sense an out of balance condition. They will try by tumbling to break the load up but will eventually give up.If it happens too often replace the inertia balance switch.

Bailey, I purchased a Thrust Bearing Kit which looks easy to install, but I can not get on the "Retaing Ring" on at the end.  The shaft has a groove at the end for it, but when I put on the last washer ring it leaves no space avaible to get to that groove.  The groove is covered by the washer ring.  I read the service manual on-line it says, "After reassembling the components on the drive shaft, it will probably be necessary to pull down on the shaft to take the end play out of it before the thrust washer and retaining ring can be reinstalled."  I tried with some force to pull it down with no success.  I was worried that if I pulled extremely hard that I might do damage.  Do I need to clamp on to it with a pair of vice grips and pull down really hard?  Suggestions are really appreciated.  Thanks.

Put a flat screwdriver in the groove and use leverage to pull it down. Start the clip from the opposite side of the screwdriver.  Once you get it started, it should go on easily.

Yep. Those things are a pain. I think everybody has trouble with that clip, but follow the previous instructions and with a little patience it will go on.

Thanks again.  I tried for 3 hours total and still had no luck.  I finally called a friend of a friend who did appliance repair to help.  We worked together for 2.5 hour and finally got it.  He said that he has been in the business for over 30 years and has never seen anything as hard as this retaining ring to get on.  Now that it's on the washer works well.
