Any Service Bulletins for Light Switch Problems?
« on: August 24, 2012, 11:51:45 PM »
Got a call for a broken light switch on GE top mount refrigerator.  Easy call, right? Wrong! Replaced the switch, the door wouldn't close right and the light stayed on.  There's a protrusion on the door liner that's supposed to push in the switch, it misses to the right.  It pushes on the side of the switch plunger which is probably what broke the original switch.  So, I tried a few things and finally got it to work by shimming the right side of the upper hinge. It's not pretty but it worked.  Is there a service bulletin for this problem?

I would yank the door off and throw a washer on hinge. You may have a worn cam riser. I do know that on some ge refrigerators there is an adjustment bolt on the hinge itself that will raise the door.generally on bottom hinge.

Why are GE service bulletins so hard to come by?  Anyway, if there is one, it probably says to shim the center hinge.  Next time I'm going to run a bead of caulk around the hinge so it looks better.

Aren't there supposed to be plastic spacers under the hinge from the factory? Seems like a door removal during installation and "OH WE DON'T NEED THESE" job.

Put a washer, plastic or metal and this will raise the door up and close the switch. This job in and out should take less than 20 minutes.

Tried that wouldn't work, went with the shim behind (as in pic) the center hinge and worked fine.

This problem should have been completed four days ago with simple washer on bottom hinge. 10 minute job.

As I posted above . I also had same problem. I installed 4 shims on the lower hinge, no change. Even installed shims under the lower door pin. No go. Installed shim as in picture and solved it.

Same here. The problem was not that the door was not raised up enough.  The part of the liner that is supposed to close the switch was not lined up right.  Shimming the hinge as shown, moved the top of the door to the left and in line with the switch.
