Whirlpool Washer - Noisy

Hello, I am working on a Whirlpool Washer Model # WTW4850XQ0 and when you put this machine into spin it makes a weird noise like rubber rubbing together. Checked between the tubs - no problem, checked underneath where the belt cover is over the belt - no problem... I am thinking its the transmission-does that sound right, it only makes the noise when in spin and if you turn tub by hand you do not get the noise... if it is the transmission are they hard to replace or be rebuilt as I have never taken a transmission out of one of these machines....I need help!!!!! Take cover off bottom and tighten bolt on large pulley.

     One other hint - use some locktite when tightening nut on the bottom pulley.   I've seen a few of these loosen up already and cut the belt cover.    I don't believe the transmission would cause the noise,  but who knows - we're on new ground with these just like when the 1st direct drives came out in 1984.   It will take a few years to learn all of these machines quirks and idiosyncracy's.   These, my friends,  are the new direct drives whether we like them or not.   We're just unfamiliar with them right now.

I have two tranny on order for that noise. I'll let you know if it fixes it.

tranny is easy to change. i've only done one it was in the shop think it took 40 min or less. changed it for noise but not rubber on rubber more grinding. good luck with noise and let us know what you find. these machines i think are gonna be easy once we learn ins and outs, definetley gonna be tightening mainpulleys,replacing lid sitches, and actuators.

This customer decided to just buy another , too bad for me as I was looking forward to taking out the transmission and figuring this out... Just out of curiosity how does this trnny come out? How many bolts, anything like the old direct drive? Send me some info if you have time.... thanks Again!!

You should have offer the customer twenty or thirty bucks for washer. Then you would have it for your education.

This washer has a spanner nut just like the old style. There is no transmission. A shaft, bearing and tub seal, along with a plastic gear on bottom pulley. Pretty basics. There's a tech manual that will show you how to diagnos and pull up fault codes, etc.
