Whirlpool Washer will agitate but won't spin, not the coupler

My washer will agitate, but not spin. I have checked the coupler as recommended in these forums, but it is in good condition. There was a lot of black rubber-ish type of debris (fine) under the washer. But like I said, the coupler doesn't appear to be worn. I am now trying to dig further, have removed the three screws under the drive shaft? but it won't come off. I haven't used a lot of pressure on it, but I don't want to do more damage. I am still trying to dismantle this from underneath. How should I proceed?

I realize that your machine won't spin, but this page has good info. The coupler must be physically inspected.

Here are pictures of the Coupler, it looks to be good condition. Any ideas?

I'm chock full of ideas, mister. I would suspect something caught between the spin basket and outer tub, a bad clutch or even a bad gearcase. With the motor back in place and everything hooked up except the outer cabinet, you can jumper the lid switch connection to watch the transmission spin . If the lower clutch is turning but not the basket drive, there's your sign.

OK, now I'm getting somewhere. I found a broke part, see pic, and it looks like when it broke it melted in a spring. The bottom (clutch?) spring, not the brake spring. What do you think? replace both things, should I be worried if anything caused it to brake?

that little old ear is broken. That is why it wont spin. The clutch comes around and that little ear releases the brake. Left click this photo to enlarge it.

What is that little old ear called? Should any appliance parts store have it? Do you sell it?

the part you need comes with a new clutch check it out.

Do I have to buy the whole clutch assembly?

Really now, you should replace the assembly as a whole...why do things halfway just to come back later? We're not talking about an expensive part here. While you're at it, replace the coupling. You'll likely not have to worry about the machine for awhile.

At one time that part was sold seperately or in the clutch pack. We stopped selling them individually when we couldn't get anymore of them. I have no Idea if you can get one without buying the kit.
