whirlpool DU1030XTXS1 dishwasher stops running after first wash cycle

I set my dishwasher for "normal wash" with heated dry - the correct lights on the panel are on. I start the dishwasher and it will run the first wash cycle OK then stops - no indicator lights are on. There is some detergent residue left in the bottom of the tub. I run the wash cycle again and same thing happens except the detergent is all gone. I then run a rinse cycle after which the "clean" light comes on. What might be wrong and how do I troubleshoot?

Remove the access panel below the door and take a look at the motor.
