Maytag Top Loader Smelly Stinky Clothes

My old Maytag top load washer, model number LAT8624AAE, has an odd problem.  Sometimes the clothes have the "2-day left in the washer" "stale" smell to them.  There seems to be no pattern in terms of time left in the washer or load size, but it does seem to happen to mostly the grey/medium loads, so that's usually warm water.  The clothes can be taken immediately from the washer, right after the the last spin cycle and they still smell.  Any thoughts?

Put a gallon of vinegar with hot water in there and let soak a day.Do it once a month and should be ok.

You could also try just searching something like "Washer Smell", just a thought.

Have you tried using any washing machine cleaner such as afresh or washer magic?

If washer drains in stand pipe, make sure hose is only 8 to 12 inches down.

So I tried the Afresh and it seems to have fixed the problem.  How does it work?  What did it remove? From where?
