maytag dishwasher start and stops

This dishwasher come with the house when we bought it so I'm not sure how old it is.
It's a maytag mdbtt50aws dishwasher and it will fill with water and then run for a few seconds and then stop for a few seconds.
It will start and stop like this half a dozen times and then the dishwasher shuts off and all the lights go out.
Could this be something simple and cheap to repair or is it time to buy a new one?

I would take a look at the motor and see if it's getting hot the short time it's running and kicking out on the built in overload.
