It sounds like the condenser fan motor in the back buy the compressor is not working because you talk about seems to me about a lot of heat coming from under the refrigerator.take of back panel and take a look.Anytime the compressor is on this fan must be running. If not you can use a portable fan until you get service.

I just touched the compressor and it is scalding hot.  The fan is running.  You think it is the compressor gone bad?

The compressor will be hot to the touch.

At this point the tech said that it probably is the compressor.  We are thinking of not fixing it and getting a new refrigerator.  They are refunding the money that we have spent with them less the trip charge.

Yes.  He looked at all that.  Quote to replace approx 1000.  Was not GE service.

Worth repairing for 1k?

We were out just looking at refrigerators and the sales rep said that if they think it is the compressor it should be covered by the 5 year warranty (GE Profile).  I am working on calling GE.

I don't know about GE but other appliance manufactures drops the 5 year sealed system warranty to 1 year sometime ago.

If you have the owners manual for the refrigerator it should state the warranty information too.

Let us know what you find out.

Yep, I pulled the GE manual and it says GE Profile only are 5 years, the rest are 1 year.  I've got the official "GE" guys coming out on Monday afternoon.  I figure if I have to pay the $70 trip charge for them to tell me it is broken and not covered so be it.  If it is covered then the $70 and the parts and labor are covered.  Worth the $70.

That's the tricky thing.  They came with the house.  We are the first owners and closed on 2/1/2008.  Otherwise, it would be when the builder purchased them, possible back in October 2007.  Which would still be under the 5 years.
