Ge Dryer drsr495eg8ww timer won't advance in auto
« on: June 01, 2012, 02:51:26 PM »
Timer works in timed mode, but just sit still and runs forever in auto mode.  Schematic not in machine.  any ideas what I should check?  I am thinking its not the timer since it advances in timed mode.

What makes the timer advance in auto mode?

Thanks

I didnt see a resister.  it has a dryness control board.  looks like it is what sends power to the timer in auto mode.  I plan on replacing it on monday.

I had a similar issue a few years ago with a GE. One of the heating element had a break in it and the dryer wasn't getting  hot enough to cycle the thermostat.

If the timer works in timed dry and not in auto replace the control thermostat and maybe the limits if they have more than 2 wires. Seen it

JW,  can you explain how the thermostats make the timer advance?
If the dryer cycles the heat properly would that mean that the thermostats are doing their job and it would be the dryness control board?

Alright on this type system the control board advances the timer motor after the dampness is out da clothes and the capacitor on that board is no longer discharged by the dampness of the clothes a rubbin against the sensor bars. SO... either the board itself has took a dump OR the contact points on the board have corrosion and green crap on them. Yank out the board and clean the board. Then re install the board and retry before you order a new board.

Out of curiousity schleven, could you tell the board was bad by visual inspection (fried resistor, bulging capacitor, green crap on contacts, etc.) or did you just replace the board and the machine started to work?

From personal experience just yanking out the board and cleaning the contacts works for me. Ain't seen a bad dryness board yet. Seen plenty ones with corrosion on them contacts though.

I did not see any corrosion or visible signs of damage.  I tried cleaning the contacts and reinstalling the board.  It would not advance.  When I put the new board in, it did.
