cannot remove driveblock / spanner nut

after a couple google searches and videos watched i found out my washer had a bad drive block. when i got to the point to remove the spanner nut i used a hammer and flat piece of metal to hit one side until it turned.. problem is the drive block started turning as well . i was then able to pull up and remove the tub with the drive block/spanner nut still attached and know way to unscrew the spanner nut.

im wondering how i should go about preventing the drive block from turning while i try to hammer the span nut off.

Buy a new spanner nut and a drive block, cut the old 1 off with a sawall, careful not to hit tub.

If you are talking about Drive Block Part # 389140

I would use the correct tool over a flat piece of metal.
The correct took being Spanner Wrench Part # TJ90TB123A

I have never had trouble getting one off a Whirlpool direct drive washer this way, but maybe you are talking about some other type?

the kenmore model is 110.26912691  direct drive top loader washer.

 the part looks like that one. except its now missing the top flat part with the slots. (due to having worn/broke) the shaft tabs still look good though. since i did not have the means to get a spanner wrench i used the hammer/flat metal angled into a slot of spanner nut until it started moving. after it got about 1 turn , the drive block part started turning along with it. i was then able to slide the inner tub out with drive block/spanner nut still attached.

@bigbuck, i might try that. or a similiar method.

i figure if i can manage to get the drive block not to turn along with the spanner nut i could remove it. but at this point even a spanner wrench wouldnt stop the drive bolt from turning along with the nut.

Ok, I see the blocks stripped out like that a lot on the direct drives.
Don't know if I have just been lucky or if using the spanner wrench makes all the difference, but I have never had trouble getting one apart on a direct drive like that.


I would cut it like bigbuck suggested. I cut them off the old Maytag washers all the time with my dermal.



Guess a good chisel may work too.
