Kitchenaid Microwave Noisy While Heating
« on: April 21, 2008, 10:17:00 PM »

Model #KCMS185JWH2, this unit worked fine, but would make a growling noise that seemed to come from the top of the unit while it was in use. I removed the wrapper and found the source of the noise to be the stirrer motor right up on top. The stirrer is a metal disk, often shaped like a fan blade, that is used to disperse the microwaves as they exit the waveguide and enter the cooking cavity. By 'stirring' the microwaves as they enter, the absorption rate by the food is greater and more even throughout the cooking cycle. Think of it as a turntable for the microwaves. If the stirrer motor were to fail, the complaint is usually inconsistent or uneven cooking. In this case, the unit heated fine, but the noise was noticeable from the motor so it had to be replaced. Now it's as quiet as ever.
