Water Heater Leaking from Vent
« on: May 23, 2012, 10:04:05 AM »
I've got a water heater that's leaking condensation from the vent.  It vents into a brick chimney that I assume is lined.  I tried to climb the roof to check the chimney but it was too slippery.  There is a furnace next to it but they do not share a vent.  I work on a lot of water heaters but don't do any vent work.  Is there a fix?

Vent has to be blocked or restricted somewhere.

Crap!  Just what I didn't want to hear.  It's about a 6/12 pitch roof with slimy cedar shakes.  I could probably easily back out of this job if I want to. I already took care of his dishwasher and I told him the vent was a little out of my expertise.

I'm going back tomorrow. I have an electric leaf blower I used to use for blowing out dryer vents.  I'll try blowing it out. It hasn't rained for a couple of days so maybe the roof is not so slippery now.  Thanks for the help.

The B-vent will terminate were it enters the chimney block.
Disconnect the vent from the heater and chimney and blow from the basement.

He got impatient and called another company.  It turns out they just wanted to sell him another water heater.  It's only 6 years old.  I'm scheduled to go back tomorrow afternoon.  I'll let you know what I find.

You guys nailed it.  I hooked up my leaf blower and produced no results.  So then I ran my dryer vent brush up the vent. About 20 feet up the brushed stopped.  I pulled the brush out and a huge nest came out with it.  I ran the brush up a few more times.  When it popped out the top of the chimney, I knew I got it all.
What gets me is the company that wanted to replace his 6 year old water heater because of a vent problem.  He finally got them to admit that it was probably just a bird nest.  Supposedly they're a top rated company on Angies List, too.

Thanks a lot for the help.

I wonder if they would have cleaned the vent with that new install.

Thanks for the update.  O0
