Best washing machine
« on: May 19, 2012, 09:01:50 AM »
So for all you repair people and all in general posting out here what would be your recommendations for the best bang for your buck on purchase of a new washer in the mid price range. We are on a tight budget at this time.

I still like the Whirlpool top load direct drive washers the best.

Whirlpool made them for something like 25 years. They are cheap to buy compared to a front load washer.
They are easy to work on, parts are cheap and easy to get.

Here is a video showing how to disassemble one. Not that you will have to do that with a new one, but it may give you a better idea of what I'm talking about.

Hope you find our site helpful.

Problem is, they're not being made anymore.  All of the Whirlpool topload washers are the VMW design now.  You may be able to find some new old stock or you will have to buy used.

That's true. I don't know how hard they are to find anymore.

I went to Lowes and bought a Roper washer to install in a rental. I ordered it online. When they were unloading it off the truck it was tipped back
and I got a shock. Instead of the familiar transmission, I saw a little motor and a splutch. I talked to a local tech who works out of his house as a factory
tech on Whirlpools tech line and he says you can still purchase the direct drive under the Amana and Inglis brands.

Amana Washer at the home depot is what I would get:

A vmw washer is siting in my back yard dead right now with the new lid locked down.

May the hinges of our friendship
        never grow rusty.

Vertical modular washer has electronic controls. An electric pump. Locking lid switch and is belt driven. The one I have is fairly new, was in a home for disabled people. It had tons of soap powder in the bottom and was full of clothes. The lidswitch was bad. We got another one for $45 and installed it. Now I cannot get it to show any signs of life and the lid is locked. The tech sheet is 50 pages of nonsense. To program the control you move the timer knob back and forth x amount of times to reset the machine. It is a piece of crap. My opinion.

What about the new Kenmore's low end non HE agitator style 3.4 cube ft. I think they are still made by Whirlpool but not positive. Any feedback on those?

Crosley makes a VMW with an agitator, so beware if you think since it has an agitator it is OK. For the money Speed Queen but their prices just jumped $100 so are expensive, still worth it.

Even the direct drive washer like roper new at lowes the one that has the coupling we are all use to is different in that it does not fill all the way to the top with water like the old ones because of the 2011 law that says you have to make a washer use less water. Go to lowes web site and look up roper that is a direct drive then down load manual and you we see what i mean .
