Most of the time a Whirlpool direct drive washer can be repaired with one of these common parts.

Drive Parts: If you can hear your washer motor running, but your washer will not agitate or spin you may need one of these parts.

389140 Drive Block
If the drive block is stripped out your washer may act like it has a bad clutch because it will not spin very good. The drive block is located under the agitator. To check the drive block simply remove the agitator and put the washer into the spin cycle with the lid open. Watch the top of the drive block to see if it's slipping inside were the spin tube is attached to it. If it's been slipping you maybe able to see metal fillings around the top of the drive block.
285792 Basket Drive & Brake Assembly
There are often only two reason you would ever need to replace the Basket Drive & Brake assembly.
The first reason would be if the Drive Block we talked about above was stripped out. There are two tabs on top of the Basket Drive Shaft that couple with two slots in the Drive block. Sometimes these two tabs will get rounds over and not couple up very good with the new drive block, so you would have to then replace the Basket Drive & Brake Assembly when replacing the Drive Block.
The second reason you may need to replace the Basket Drive & Brake Assembly would be if the washer is stopping so hard at the end of the spin cycle that it is slamming the tub up against the inside of the cabinet making a loud banging noise when the washer stops running.
In this case to correctly repair the washer you would replace the Basket Drive & Brake Assembly.
3360629 Gear case (transmission, neutral drain)
If the washer motor runs and you have already check the motor coupler, drive block and clutch only to find that they are ok you may need to replace the transmission. If the transmission is bad then the washer will not agitate, spin or both.
