There is a switch in the ice maker that sends voltage to a solenoid operated water valve that is mounted to the back of the refrigerator. The switch only supplies voltage to the water valve solenoid for about 5-7 seconds.

The ice maker is filled with water and starts to freeze. Once the water turns to ice the heating element on the bottom of the ice maker mold turns on and melts the bottom of the ice cubes allowing them to be ejected easily.

Then the ice maker motor starts to turn the ejector blades. The ejector blades scoop out the ice cubes. As the ejector blades turn the shut off arm raises.

Once the cubes are ejected the shut off arm drops back down and a new cycle begins.

Do you need help repairing your ice maker?

Your ice maker has been working fine for years and now it no longer makes ice.

First check to see if the ice maker is getting water. If the ice maker is getting water and it’s just sitting there with ice cubes in it then there is a good chance that you will need to replace the ice maker.

But what if there is no water in the ice maker?

If the ice maker is not getting any water you may need to replace the water inlet valve that is located at the back of the refrigerator.

But before you replace that water inlet valve you will want to check the fill tube that is located in the freezer wall. It may just be frozen shut keeping water from going to the ice maker.

If the tube is frozen simply thaw it out and then check your water pressure.

Were you able to repair your ice maker or did you have to replace it with a new one?
