Dishwasher Water Inlet Valve and Float Switch

The dishwasher fill system consists of the water fill valve and a float safety switch.

Power from the control is applied to the water fill valve through the float safety.

The water valve is an electrically operated shut off valve with a flow washer that regulates the amount of water based on the water pressure applied to the valve inlet.

Water pressure needs to be between 20 and 120 psi for the dishwasher to have the proper amount of water for operation.

The float safety switch will shut off power to the valve if the tub over fills with water.

Water enters the tub through an air gap mounted to the left side of the tub.

Dishwasher Heating Element

Posted by: AJ | Comments (0)

Dishwasher Heater

The heater mounted in the bottom of the dishwasher tub increases water temperature, then in the dry cycle assist in drying the dishes.

The amperage draw of the heater can vary depending on the job it is to perform.

When heating water, the amperage draw can be around 900 watts. This amperage will drop to approximately 700 watts in the dry cycle.

Mounted next to the heater on the under side of the tub is a safety thermostat. This thermostat will open if the temperature in the tub gets to hot.

Dryer Vent

Use only 4 inch (10.2 cm) diameter (minimum) rigid or flexible metal duct and approved vent hood which has a swing-out damper(s) that open when the dryer is in operation.

When the dryer stops, the dampers automatically close to prevent drafts and the entrance of insects and rodents.

To avoid restricting the outlet, maintain a minimum of 12 inches (30.5 cm) clearance between the vent hood and the ground or any other obstruction.

Restricted, plugged or improper dryer venting will increase the time it takes to dry a load of clothes.

When was the last time you cleaned the lint out of your dryer vent?

Washer Water Level Switch

Posted by: AJ | Comments (0)

Washer Water Level Switch

1. The water level is selected by setting the switch at the desired level. This sets the tension on the diaphragm inside the water-level switch.

2. The water-level switch goes from the EMPTY position to the FULL position depending
on how much tension there is on the diaphragm.

3. As the water level increases in the tub, it also causes an increase in air pressure in
the air dome assembly. A hose between the air dome and the water-level switch transfers this pressure against the diaphragm in the water-level switch, causing electrical contacts (V toT) to close. This happens when the tub is FULL.

4. When the tub is drained to approximately half its original setting, the water-level will
return back to the empty position (V to P).

Whirlpool Washer Shipping Pin

Washer Shipping Pin

You were working on your washer or moved it and found a funny looking part on the floor?

It looks like a nail and is brass in color. It is 2 inches long and has one flat edge on the side of it. There is also a hole through it near the point.

This is a shipping pin and here is what Whirlpool has to say about them.

To prevent the two (2) shipping pins from falling on the floor, two (2) plastic holders are attached to the base. When the cotter pins are removed, the shipping pins fall into these holders. These pins may be left in the holder cups. They will not interfere with the operation of the washer.

Sometimes when the washer is moved around these pins will fall out of the plastic cups and onto the floor.

Did you find one of the shipping pins on the floor when you moved your washer?

How Do Ice Makers Work?

Posted by: AJ | Comments (0)

How Do Ice Makers Work?

There is a switch in the ice maker that sends voltage to a solenoid operated water valve that is mounted to the back of the refrigerator. The switch only supplies voltage to the water valve solenoid for about 5-7 seconds.

The ice maker is filled with water and starts to freeze. Once the water turns to ice the heating element on the bottom of the ice maker mold turns on and melts the bottom of the ice cubes allowing them to be ejected easily.

Then the ice maker motor starts to turn the ejector blades. The ejector blades scoop out the ice cubes. As the ejector blades turn the shut off arm raises.

Once the cubes are ejected the shut off arm drops back down and a new cycle begins.
